Wyclef Jean disqualified presidential candidate
Wyclef Jean will not be allowed to run for the presidency of Haiti after their well-publicized campaign was disqualified.
Speculation that The Fugees star had failed to make a shortlist of candidates for the election was confirmed yesterday when the Haitian electoral commission decided that he was not a suitable candidate for the title.
Jean told the AP that although he was disappointed with the decision, he hoped his supporters would follow his example and accept the news “calmly and responsibly.”
“Although I disagree with the ruling I respectfully accept the final decision of the committee and I urge my supporters to do the same” he said.
Although the commission did not detail the reasoning behind the exclusion of Jean. it is believed that the star of 40 years of age could not meet several legal requirements to run for office including not having lived in the country for the last five years.
Despite this, Jean previously said it would launch a campaign for the presidency after a meeting with Haiti’s current leader on Thursday.
